Ayaz Ali - Assignment 15

Assignment 15

My segment was on teachers when interviewing based on my topic, and now I found three more to interview for this week.

1) The first teacher I went to was my former high school teacher, Mrs. Kennedy, and she is currently still a teacher. So I asked her about when she chooses a product what she looks for the most. How much does price matter, and how much does she value quality. She explained how it all depends. If she was buying a small purchase such as which brand toothpaste she wanted, she would probably prefer to go with the cheaper one. However, lets say she was buying a car, she would of course look into many more details, and take price and overall quality into account. She explained how also looking into a big purchase how she would need to consult with her husband beforehand. Mrs. Kennedy explained how she liked to buy products in a store because she does not have good experiences and explained how she would rather just see a product and get a good in-person view rather than purchasing online in the order to avoid the wait and hassle. My former teacher explained how she almost always purchases using cash, unless she was paying a large amount for something. Obviously buying groceries or things like that with cash is normal, but of course when purchasing a car or an expensive TV, she would rather finance the purchase. She explained how she tells if a purchase is worth it or not depending on how much she uses and how long it lasts for.

2) The next person I went to was actually my aunt who is a former teacher. I asked her to same questions as the first interviewee and got pretty much the same responses. She explained how quality is key to her. She explained how she does not agree with saving a few cents or dollars an going with something with less quality. Better quality is totally worth the extra money in her opinion especially when it comes to grocery products such as food. Bad quality food could lead to sicknesses and it just is not worth it. She explained how she always uses her debit or credit card and not cash because it is just easier. A big reason she uses her cards over cash is because she accumulates points with her bank and gets money back for using the card. She is mixed about purchasing online or in store and does not really mind the difference between the two except when making big purchases. My aunt usually always includes my uncle when making purchases since they are very similar in spending habits. It is all about how good the product is and how much she is going to use it. When it comes to purchases being bad, she explains if she stops using it relatively soon or the price just was not worth it.

3) The last interviewee was my former professor, Mr. Jackson. He had a pretty similar view as the other people when it came to product evaluation. He prefers in-store over online just because he likes to see and feel what he is buying before making a purchase. To him, price and quality matters more. He does not really care about style, and to him comfort and value is more important. He usually purchases with credit and debit as well because he also has the rewards programs with his bank. He usually makes purchases on his own since it is his money, but sometimes informs his wife when making bigger purchases. Good products are based on price and value for Mr. Jackson and he hates wasting money, so he really looks into a product before buying. He has of course made bad purchases and has learned from his mistakes.

In conclusion, I saw that all three interviewees were pretty conscious about their money spending habits, and really focused on the details of the product. Value and pricing is important to all people and especially quality. They all have similar views as to wether or not the product was a good or bad purchase based on how much they use the product and how quickly they stop using it. In the end everyone is money conscious and makes decisions that give them the best value.

Comments

  1. Hello Ayaz,

I found it interesting how all of the teachers preferred to shop in person. It makes sense to see the product in person to understand it more, but I almost always go back and buy it online after doing some research on the product. I also agree that quality is key and is a very important factor. Like the first interviewee said, you want the product to last. I loved all the interviews and found them very informative.

  2. I do the same thing. Depending on the type of purchase will determine how much money I am willing to put in. If I am going to use the product for a long time, or what i deem a long time, then I will pay a higher price for more quality. Vice versa for products that I won't use for a long time, I will pay less and go for cheaper products.

  3. Shalom Ayaz, great job with this post I really enjoyed reading it. I am happy to hear that these teachers are generally good with their money and are detail oriented. I have experienced similar things with teachers and professors and I think that's because they don't earn as much as many other professions, and yet they're typically smarter than average people. I hope you are able to provide value to these customers so your business will be successful!

  4. Ayaz,
This is good feedback to have in general. The purchaser for what you are looking at selling will actually be the comptroller for the school district, state department of education, etc. When pricing and choosing how to differentiate your products to set up for sale, I would focus on the things that will matter most to them, which is going to be cost so that they can get the most out of their budgets.
