Ayaz Ali 2A - Bug List

Assignment 2A - Bug List
This assignment was very interesting for me, as I never really put much thought into the "bugs" that I see happening all around me. With that being said here is my list of "bugs":

1. Whenever I need to charge my phone, I have to twist the wire around at an awkward position for it to actually charge.
  • Why do I have to twist my charger for it to work?
    • It is clear that this charging wire is not at a 100% and it clearly is not as effective as it should be. It would probably be best for me to invest in a new wire soon.
2. This may seem a bit ridiculous, but instead of going to buy water, I go to my local community gym and fill my gallon up every time I run out.

  • Why do I continue to not buy water, or why do I not invest in a filter?
    • This is one that has really been bugging me, but I am just being lazy and do not feel like going to the store and buying more water. Clearly, it is time for me to make a change.
3. Every time I go on the bus to get to campus, it is always freezing cold!

  • Why is the bus always super cold?
    • This one has been a consistent bug for me, and the bus being cold could be because it is such a large amount of power being used that the AC is blasting throughout the bus and getting pushed through the entire bus. This is probably for the better, because I would hate for the bus to be steaming hot.
4. My car always seems to have some sort of engine light blinking every time I drive it.

  • Why is there a engine light consistently on in my car?
    • My car is old, and it has tons of issues, but it gets the job done. I think I am riding it out as long as possible, and as long as it gets me to where I have to go, then I have no issues. However, maybe I should get it checked out soon.
5. Every time I am studying in my room, my lamp light starts to flicker after about 20 minutes.

  • Why does the light always start to flicker after a certain amount of time?
    • I think the simple solution for this situation would be to purchase a new light bulb and finally study in peace.
6. I play a lot of sports, and for some reason no matter how much I stretch, my right calf is always feeling intense pain.

  • Why does my calf hurt so much whenever I play sports?
    • I used to believe it was because I did not stretch enough, but I am starting to think there could be a serious issue with my calf, and I should get it checked out soon.
7. Whenever I try to take the bus home to my apartment, Gainesville Place, after 5 PM, there is an overload of traffic and takes forever to get home.

  • Why does the traffic pick up after 5 PM?
    • The traffic picks up around this time because I believe many people start to get off of work and are also heading home. Maybe on days when I get home later I should try an alternate form of transportation like a bike.
8. Every time I go to Library West, there is such a long line at Starbucks!

  • Why is the Library West Starbucks line so long?
    • I believe the line is so long because many students, including myself, like to drink coffee or have a snack while working or studying.
9. I cook a good amount of food on my own, and for some reason whenever I use the stove, the smoke detector always goes off and makes a ton of noise!

  • Why does the smoke detector make so much noise and always go off?
    • I think this obviously for safety reasons, and you never know when a real fire can happen. I do feel bad when it makes a lot of noise and disrupts my roommates. Could there be an alternative to this?
10. My service on my phone, Sprint, is always super slow, and does not even work in certain areas!

  • Why is the Sprint service so bad?
    • I researched this on my own and found that Sprint does not have as many service towers as other leading phone providers.
11. Sometimes when trying to locate certain rooms on campus, it can be very difficult.

  • Why is it so hard to find certain places on campus?
    • Our campus is ginormous, about 2,000 acres large. The school provides maps, but even then it can difficult to find certain places. Could there be a solution to this?
12. Many classes require students to have HIIT clickers, but they are so expensive!

  • Why are HIIT clickers to expensive?
    • This one personally bothers me, because as students we already have to buy so many materials, and now a HIIT clicker is almost $40. The school knows students will buy them which is why they know the price will not matter to them.
13. Me and many of my friends play basketball at night in the SouthWest Recreation Center, but this year they changed the hours so it closes at 12 now!

  • Why did the Recreation Center change their hours?
    • One of my friends who works in the Center said they close it earlier so the staff can start cleaning earlier. Do I get it? Yes. Do I agree? Absolutely not.
14. I am Muslim, and I only eat halal food, but the options are so limited in Gainesville!

  • Why are their such little halal restaurants in Gainesville?
    • I think many people do not think about or even know what halal food is. It is extra work for restaurant owner and I do not think they want to go through the extra hassle.
15. I live in Gainesville Place Apartments, and the apartment is nice, but the rent is really high for college students!

  • Why is the rent at Gainesville Place so expensive?
    • I think in the end, these are apartment complexes and the owners need to make their money. However, with so many units, it would be nice if the owners can lower the price just a tad. The owners do realize that regardless people will pay to live in the apartments.
16. Many times I would prefer to take my car and park on campus, but the traffic on campus can make drivers super late!

  • Why is there so much traffic on campus for drivers?
    • On campus, the priority is given to students. If you realize, almost every few hundred feet there are yield to walkers signs and theres always students crossing the streets to get to different places. As a driver, you can get held up for quite a while.
17. For many classes, StudyEdge can be used and also can be very useful. However, a minimum of $25 or possibly even having to pay $50 is very pricey!

  • Why is StudyEdge so expensive?
    • StudyEdge is an excellent outside source, which has really helped me. It is very pricey as you can either pay the $25 or $50 a month, however the price has not changed many people's choice on using the resource.
18. The dumpsters in my neighborhood are not close to my apartment at all!

  • Why do the neighborhood directors not include more than two dumpster and why are they not located in areas that are suitable for all people living there?
    • This may be the fact that there may not be much space to include more dumpsters as well as not hearing enough complaints to make a change.
19. There are very few bus routes that come near my apartment!

  • Why are their only a few bus routes that come and go from my apartment complex?
    • The bus that comes usually to my apartment is the 38 route. This bus does come frequently, but many other routes do not even come near Gainesville Place. I am assuming since the 38 comes frequently, the other bus routes do not feel the need to come towards my area.
20. This issue has been bothering me and many students for a long time. That issue is textbook prices!

  • Why are textbooks so expensive?
    • This issue has been with me for years, and even now for three classes I just spent $200 for 3 textbooks. assume many sellers know students will find a way to buy these books regardless, so they do not care about the prices they charge.

  • This assignment was definitely more interesting and different than one what I am normally used to. I guess for me there were many "bugs" in my life, but I never really thought it about it. It was hard for me to think of certain issues, but eventually I got the hang of it and it made me start to think of possible solutions, where possible, to the issues.

Comments

  1. Hi Ayaz! Your post was really interesting and here are some comments I have:
    (1) This is a constant problem I have too. Both my charger and my headphones are old and breaking and it is definitely annoying to twist the wires until they work. I think you are right, We need to buy new wires before they completely break. (11) I am a new student so this issue still a bug for me in many ways. What I try to do is to use the Rider app to know for sure where my building is and try to get to class 15 min before just in case I get lost in this big campus. I should mention that I enjoyed how detailed and organized your post is. Keep the hard work!

  2. 2. This may seem a bit ridiculous, but instead of going to buy water, I go to my local community gym and fill my gallon up every time I run out.
Why do I continue to not buy water, or why do I not invest in a filter?
This is one that has really been bugging me, but I am just being lazy and do not feel like going to the store and buying more water. Clearly, it is time for me to make a change.

I am in the same situation. I understand the laziness that afflicts us. Friedrich Nietzsche says that humans have a tendency to laziness; they hide themselves from their neighbor and choose to follow the herd. If you wish to truly be yourself, travel away from the herd. In this case, let us both get our Britas.

    8. Every time I go to Library West, there is such a long line at Starbucks!
Why is the Library West Starbucks line so long?
I believe the line is so long because many students, including myself, like to drink coffee or have a snack while working or studying.

Break from the herd! Do not follow the path of your peers. Waiting in line is a waste of existence, it is conformity. Rather make your own coffee, bring your own snacks.

I suffer from the common pleasures of man as well. Every day I do at least one thing that progresses myself, which is: Reading books, studying for my classes, waking up at a consistent time, listening to history, etc. We are each special, no one human is the same; it is up to us to seek within us our potential. Get that Brita and make your own Coffee.
